Devlin nearly dropped his partner when the pretty time scientist disappeared right in front of his eyes. He lowered the enforcer to the floor and bellowed, “Get a medic in here.”

There was nothing he could do for the pain ricocheting through the other man’s head like a wrecking ball. He knew. He’d tried.

“Watch over him,” he said to a researcher who came to help. He pushed himself to his feet. “Where did the female researcher go?”

“She just vanished.” The lead scientist pointed at the open storage box. “My goodness, could she have gotten the portable unit working?”

Gasps went up across the room as nervous excitement charged the air, but Devlin broke out in a cold sweat. If anyone could, she could. He’d watched her day in and day out, whenever he’d been assigned to her area. She was as sharp as a tack.

“When?” he asked. “When did she go?”

He strode around the fallen enforcer to her lab bench. Medics had arrived. There was nothing he could do to help, but that wasn’t his priority anymore.

They’d had a breach of the time continuum.

“What year were you looking at?” he bit out. “What date was set as a destination?”

The researcher who sat next to her kept flapping his mouth like a flounder. He knew nothing.

Devlin curled his fingers into his palms. Time travel was outlawed. More importantly, it was dangerous. He needed to go after her, but where in the timeline should he insert himself? The chips implanted in all residents’ hips allowed him to track location, but he needed to be in the same time period as the person for the technology to work.

He looked over her things. The mobile doohickey was gone. Had she accidentally activated the device when she’d fallen—or had she taken advantage of an unfortunate opportunity? His training taught him to assume the worst.

Her e-notebook.

He quickly scanned through her notes. Lucky for him, she was thorough.

He shoved the notebook under the lead researcher’s nose. “Set up the portal,” he ordered. “I’m going to prep.”
